We have three classic Peugeots to try out: a 504 saloon, this one built in 1974, and powered by a 93hp 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine.

The original car was a four-door saloon that came with a sunroof as standard. The engine was a petrol four-cylinder that delivered 79 bhp. The majority of these early cars came with a carburettor though there was the option of fuel injection. The four-speed manual transmission was Colum mounted, but could be upgraded into the three speed automatic.

Peugeot launched its conservative but well-engineered flagship 504 Saloon at the 1968 Paris Salon. Widely praised for its modern styling, solid build quality, chassis strength, smooth ride, good all-round visibility, strong engines and refinement, it went on to win the European Car of the Year award, narrowly beating the Jaguar XJ6 - very high praise indeed!

4-door 5-seater saloon/estate car. Larger, smoother and more modern Peugeot medium-sized car to replace 404 - but this took years. All-independent suspension on saloons at first, some down-market versions with rigid rear axle from '73; cavernous estates always had rigid rear end.

The 504 was a sunroof -equipped four-door saloon, introduced with a carbureted 1,796 cc four-cylinder petrol engine 60 kW (82 PS; 81 hp) DIN with 71 kW (97 PS; 96 hp) on tap with the optional fuel injection. At the time of introduction, Peugeot still used the SAE rating, with claimed power numbers of 87 and 103 cv respectively.

The 1968 Peugeot 504 saloon - voted Car of the Year for 1969 - continued a tradition established with the 404 by selling in huge numbers (more than 2.8 million by 1982), and providing the basis for elegant coupé and convertible variations with bodies not only designed but also constructed by Pininfarina.
